Analogue sets provide the viewer with an historical aesthetic yet the visual treatment being split sync’d (not repeated) across all screens provides a contemporary juxtaposition to that aesthetic. The colour accuracy of CRT screens allows images to be blazon, glitched, subtle, digital and everything in between.

Seated Man

Our seated guest invites us in. With the hat, the taiaha, we are left guessing what thoughts they may have. We are observing the observer, our Tangata whenua, a descendant of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Images begin of Aotearoa as a clean slate. Kākā are singing for their mate. Oceans smash against rocks. Waka slice the sea. Wind carries the cloud… <Glitch>… Air drives the sails. Land is broken. Hooves scatter earth. Chimneys are erected. Mannequins sale over the fiords. Suburbs spread. Kākā’s calls rebound. Trees are felled. Industry is built. Steam locomotion puffs. Possums scurry. Mannequins cross forests. Lali drums are beaten. A regatta fills the harbour. Smokers exhale on K Rd. DB Bitter moves along conveyor belts. Mannequins cross Manukau. Fishing lines in harbour. Mannequins down the lanes. Kai on the grill. Planes in the sky. Mannequins across the temples. Fireworks explode. Pedestrians cross Queen St. Trains wipe traffic away until we’re back to our clean slate. Repeat.

I used this opportunity to produce a multi-screen story that highlighted the degradation of our shared environment using synchronised CRT screens.
